What kisspeptin-10 is and its research context
Kisspeptin-10 is a ten-amino-acid peptide, the shortest biologically active C-terminal fragment of the kisspeptin family encoded by the KISS1 gene. The full-length product, kisspeptin-54 (also known as metastin), is cleaved into shorter fragments, of which kisspeptin-10 retains the receptor-binding region. Kisspeptins are the endogenous ligands of the G-protein-coupled receptor KISS1R, also called GPR54.
Kisspeptin-10 is studied in preclinical research on KISS1R/GPR54 receptor pharmacology, on the regulation of GnRH neurons and on signalling along the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. Because it is the smallest fragment that binds the receptor, it is a convenient reference compound in binding assays and in comparative studies of kisspeptin analogues, and it is often run as a positive control when new KISS1R ligands are characterised in cell-based assays. Like other short peptides, it is more stable as lyophilised powder than in solution.
