SS-31, also known as Elamipretide or MTP-131, is a synthetic tetrapeptide belonging to the Szeto-Schiller peptide family, designed to selectively target the inner mitochondrial membrane. Its mechanism of action centers on its interaction with cardiolipin — a phospholipid unique to the inner mitochondrial membrane that plays a structural and functional role in the electron transport chain and ATP synthase activity.
Research has explored SS-31's effects on mitochondrial membrane potential, cristae architecture, and electron transport chain efficiency in pre-clinical models.
